Cornell Cooperative Extension, Schuyler County Teaching Garden Vandalized

posted 5/29/2012

On Friday May 18, 2012, between the hours of 10-11 pm, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Schuyler County Teaching Garden at the Human Services Complex in Montour Falls was damaged by vandals. Security cameras did record a group of individuals, in a blue or black extended cab Chevy pickup w/short box with a tarped object in back, removing plants and attempting to evade detection by passing traffic. Many fruit and vegetable plants were stolen, including some trial varieties. The majority of plants in the garden were donated by nurseries and local individuals. The garden is used by the whole community, with produce utilized in nutrition classes and donated to local food pantries. While we are saddened by these events, we recognize that this is an isolated incident, and we appreciate the continued support of our participants, volunteers and the broader community.

There was substantial traffic on Owego Street and Mary Lawton Drive during the theft, and CCESC would appreciate any assistance in locating the individuals involved. If you have any information, please call the Schuyler County Sheriff’s office on this current active case at (607) 535-8222.
