Summer Reading Club Program Kicks Off July 5th--Dream Big: READ!

posted 6/19/2012

This year summer reading is all about the night, stars and dreaming: Dream Big. Read! Our kick off will be full of starry skies for dreamers young and old.

We will have a mobile planetarium set up in the Civic Center ice rink July 5th during the kick off, from noon to 2 p.m. Kids and adults can gaze at the stars, learn a little about astronomy, do some crafts and, of course, sign up early for the Summer Reading Program, which runs from July 9th-August 18th this year.

There are five reading level categories: read to me, beginning reader, chapter book reader, young adult reader and adult reader. Once readers are signed up, they become eligible to win prizes just for reading.

The real prizes of course are the benefits of reading. Not only is reading enjoyable but studies indicate that reading during the summer helps children retain the knowledge they have gained during the school year.

In addition to reading and prizes the Summer Reading Program is known for its fantastic Thursday programs. The lineup this year will not disappoint. These programs take place in the Civic Center ice rink. Large groups should let the library know in advance that they will be attending by calling (607) 936-3713 ext. 503. Otherwise, sign up is not required.

The schedule is as follows:

July 12th: Madcap Puppets, puppet theater that’s life size! | When You Wish Upon a Fish: Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm star in this hilarious adventure that includes three versions of The Fisherman and His Wife.

July 19th: Theatreworks U.S.A presents Yarina: Music of the Andes | Dressed in native costume, Yarina sings in Spanish, English and their native Kichwa. The audience will enjoy hearing more than 20 different indigenous musical instruments.

July 26th: Benmor Enterprises presents Mastodons, Cavemen and Bears – Oh My! | This program highlights the Ice Age and will reimagine the life of cavemen. Meet 60,000 year-old (can you imagine!?) Neanderthal Moshe, see fossils and play, “Are you smarter than a caveman?”

August 2nd: Dextre Tripp | Dextre Tripp will captivate and amaze with a performance blending acrobatics, balancing tricks, unusual juggling and comedy.

August 9th: Moreland the Magician | An annual favorite, Moreland the Magician returns with his, “Dream Big: Read!” magic show. Kids of all ages will enjoy his astonishing illusions and nonstop comedy.

August 16th: Doc Possum: End of Summer Dance Party | Celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program with our annual summer dance party.
