Interested in becoming a Child Passenger Technician?

posted 6/20/2012

The regional coordinator for the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee has several Chemung County police officers looking for a Child Passenger Safety course to become car seat technicians. In order to set up the training, we need to find an additional 6-10 individuals who would like to be trained. The course would be offered in the Bath area in August. The registration fee for the course is just $75 for four days of instruction and meals are provided each day.

The national standardized child passenger safety technician certification course is four days long and combines classroom instruction, hands-on work with car seats and vehicles, and a community safety seat checkup event. At the checkup event, students demonstrate skills learned during class, following event procedures and instructions, proper use and installation of child restraints and safety belts and the ability to teach parents and caregivers how to properly protect their family on the road. Successful completion of this course certifies the individual as a CPS technician for two years.

If you are a provider of services to children or families, this is a great value-added service to provide to your clients. The training takes place over three consecutive days and on the fourth day a car seat event is offered for “real life” installations.

Please contact Beverly Butts at Steuben County Public Health to indicate an interest or for any questions. Bev is a CPS Technician and can be reached at 607-664-2438  or beverlyb@co.steuben.ny.us
