C TRAN Hosts "Memories of the '72 Flood" Exhibit

C TRAN, formerly Chemung County Transit, will host an exhibition of historical photographs at the Chemung County Transportation Center along the Elmira Promenade. The photos are part of the Chemung County Historical Society's "Memories of the '72 Flood" exhibition. In both exhibitions, the photographs are paired with personal accounts gathered by museum staff.

Nearly everyone who lived in the Chemung Valley in 1972 has a flood story to share. Forty years ago Hurricane Agnes caused massive flooding that affected many people who lived and worked in communities along the Chemung River. The story of the Flood of '72 is not just about loss and destruction, but a tale that marks 1972 as a milestone in the memories of local people. 

The Flood of '72 spurred the development of dams and levees and incited change along the river's edge. The exhibition at the Transportation Center uses photographs and quotations to tell the story of what happened in June of 1972 and asks residents to consider if they are prepared for survival in the hours immediately following a natural disaster, before help arrives.

The selected photographs at the Transportation Center will remain on display through December, and the full exhibition with artifacts and interactive units will remain on display at the Chemung Valley History Museum until September 30th.
