Reminder: Senior Farmer's Market Coupon Distribution This Week

posted 7/18/2012

The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care will be distributing NYS Senior Farmer's Market Coupons this week at Wisner Park and the Eastside Farmer's Market. Eligible seniors will receive a $20 coupon booklet that can be used at approved Farmer's Market Vendors in New York State.

The coupons may not be used in grocery stores, road side stands or small markets. Vendors must have a blue SFMNP poster being displayed. Booklets are limited to one per household, one per season.

The coupons can only be used for fresh produce, and cannot be used for plants, jellies, lunch items, or anything else at the market. No change will be given back from the coupons, but generally, the vendors are very friendly, and will assist the senior in utilizing the coupons to the maximum benefit.

Booklets will only be distributed to Chemung County residents at 60 years of age or older who also meet the following requirements:

1) Monthly income must be at or below these amounts:

  • 1 person household:  $1,722/month
  • 2 person household:  $2,333/month
  • 3 person household:  $2,943/month

2) OR currently receiving or eligible to receive at least one of the following: SSI, public assistance, or Section 8 housing subsidy.

The booklets will only be distributed directly to the eligible senior at the distribution site, but other's can shop for the senior at the markets. Standards for eligibility and participation in the SFMNP are the same for everyone, regardless of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex.

Booklets will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last at the following times and locations:

  • Thursday, July 19th at Wisner Park from 9 am - 11 am
  • Friday, July 20th at Eastside Farmer's Market from 2:30 pm - 4 pm

Seniors may also pick up coupons at the Department of Aging and Long Term Care, 425 Pennsylvania Avenue in Elmira, between 9 am and 3 pm, Monday through Friday.
