Limited Number of Farmer's Market Coupon Booklets Still Available for Eligible Seniors
The Chemung County Department for Aging and Long Term Care has 60 NYS Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program coupons still available for distribution to eligible seniors. The $20 coupon booklet can be used at any New York State farmer's markets.
The Department has distributed over 620 coupon booklets to eligible seniors so far this year. The booklets must be distributed by September 30th but can be used at any New York State farmer's market through November 15th.
"We are moving into prime harvest time in New York State with apples and many other fruits and vegetables coming into season soon," said Kent Goben, Chemung County Dept. of Aging and LTC Nutrition Services Coordinator. "Local markets will go through until at least the end of September with many open well into October. These coupons can be used at any farmers markets including the Windmill and the Ithaca Farmer's Market which stay open even later in the season," he added. Booklets are limited to one per household, one per season and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last at the following locations:
- Thursday's at Wisner Park from 10am to 2pm
- Friday's at the Eastside Farmer's Market from 3pm to 6pm
Seniors may also pick up coupons at the Department of Aging and Long Term Care, 425 Pennsylvania Avenue in Elmira, between 9am and 3pm, Monday through Friday.
Booklets will only be distributed to Chemung County residents at 60 years of age or older who also meet the following requirements:
1- Monthly income must be at or below these amounts:
1 person household: $1,722/month
2 person household: $2,333/month
3 person household: $2,943/month
2- OR currently receiving or eligible to receive at least one of the following: SSI, public assistance, or Section 8 housing subsidy.
The booklets will only be distributed directly to the eligible senior at the distribution site, but others can shop for the senior at the markets. Standards for eligibility and participation in the SFMNP are the same for everyone, regardless of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex.
