In today’s world, a person cannot avoid the media image of how an ideal woman should appear. It has come to the attention of many that the unrealistic perception may be leading to low self-esteem in individuals of all ages. The DOVE Campaign for Real Beauty has taken action by launching a global effort in the mission to expand the stereotypical attitudes of what beauty is. According to www.campaignforrealbeauty.com, only 2% of women around the world describe themselves as beautiful, and 81% of women in the U.S. strongly agree that “the media and advertising set an unrealistic standard of beauty that most women can’t ever achieve.” In an effort to adjust the negative self image in our local community, Girl Scout troops in the Twin Tiers are now able to obtain badges that teach young women on the issues of positive body image and self-esteem. The troops have had a positive response towards this effort, and feel it is a project which helps to encourage positive self esteem. The Girl Scout troops in the Twin Tiers provide a wide range of supervised recreational activities and delinquency prevention services for children and youth of all ages and backgrounds.
