AmeriCorps - Southern Tier Opportunity Corps

AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with a modest living stipend and education award in exchange for one year or two of community service.

The AmeriCorps Southern Tier Opportunity Corps (STOC) places members in human service and workforce agencies in the Finger Lakes/Southern Tier region of upstate New York, providing critically-needed job and housing assistance to low-income individuals/families. AmeriCorps caseworkers working on housing assistance issues help individuals, including the homeless, access and find appropriate housing. For unemployed, economically disadvantaged individuals, service work includes providing remedial/GED education, needed casework support, and any job training/soft skills development that would increase an individual's likelihood of employment. Agencies are located throughout Steuben County, New York (Corning, Bath, Hornell), as well as Chemung (Elmira), Schuyler (Watkins Glen), and Tompkins Counties.

Once accepted as an AmeriCorps member, the commitment is typically 1,700 hours for a full-time service term, which is usually completed in 12 months. Some half-time terms may also be available. As an AmeriCorps member, you'll learn teamwork, communication, responsibility, and other essential skills that will help you for the rest of your life - and you'll gain the personal satisfaction of taking on a challenge and seeing results.
