Are you or anyone you know interested in starting a farm? If you are then come join us at the Farming 101 workshop on March 11th, 2017. In this workshop you will learn about planning a farm, soil and site considerations, land clearing and forest resources, and basics of livestock and horticultural crop production.
This event will take place in the 4-H Building at the Chemung County Fairground on 170 Fairview Drive, Horseheads, NY 14845. The event will run from 9 am until 3 pm. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The cost to attend this event is $15 per person or $25 per couple.
At 9 am registration and breakfast will take place in the 4-H Building. This will then be followed by a welcome and overview of the program at 9:20 am. After this at 9:30 am Monika Roth (CCE Tompkins), Ashur Terwilliger (Chemung County Farm Bureau), and Matt LeRoux (CCE Tompkins) will cover the basics to get started in farming. Then at 10:30 am Janice Degni (Cortland CCE) and Brett Chedzoy (Schuyler CCE) will talk about getting to know your land resources. Business considerations such as taxes and regulations will be covered by Monika Roth at 11:30 am before breaking for lunch at noon. In the afternoon folks will have the option to choose either the livestock or horticultural crop track. The livestock track will take place in the Conservation Cabin and begin at 1 pm. Barb Martin (Park Hill Poultry) will talk about raising heritage and pasture poultry and Hailey Pipher (Willow Valley Farm) will present on raising beef and pork. As for the horticultural crop track, that will take place in the 4-H Building and begin at 1 pm. The Hepners (StoneyRidge Orchard and Winery) will present on growing fruits and Matt Glen (Muddy Fingers Farm) will talk about vegetable production.
