The Arc Steuben Highlights its Self-Advocacy Group, Incredible Angels, for International Day of People with Disabilities

The Arc Steuben’s self-advocacy group, Incredible Angels, spend a vast amount of time advocating for human rights, volunteering, and fundraising. The group of self-advocates often attend conferences; plan public events, and host craft nights throughout the year. With a mission focusing on being person-centered, The Arc Steuben’s associates support people to fulfill their responsibilities as officers and members; all the while emboldening them to make their own choices about how the group spends funds, time, and effort.

In June, several members of the Incredible Angels self-advocacy group were able to attend the Self Advocates of New York State’s Western Regional Self-Advocacy Conference held in Batavia. Attendees picked from a number of interesting sessions over the two-day conference. Topics ranged from issues such as benefits at work and managed care, to lighter topics such as healthy eating and vision boards. Members of the Incredible Angels taught A Game of Rights, a session about human rights and responsibilities.

Driven by giving back to the community, the Incredible Angels volunteer; holding drives for local organizations. The self-advocacy group often decides to plan annual events with no cost to the community. A percent of the proceeds from their annual spaghetti dinner, held in November at the Steuben County VFW, directly benefits area veterans.

The Incredible Angels are constantly recruiting new members and developing community partnerships. The self-advocates would be happy to talk to you about the work that they do. Send a letter or donation to the group here:
