Melissa Garner, senior program manager, was named Associate of the Month for the month of January. Garner was nominated by Beckie Austin, community supports director, for her willingness to take on extra responsibilities while also performing her regular duties and providing relief in the residential homes. “Melissa has recently taken over the Prevocational programs on top of her duties as Senior Program Manager for Day Habilitation Programs. This has added an additional four staff to the staff that she oversees and has required her to learn two new programs. Melissa is a true asset to the community supports department, and the agency as a whole, and is deserving of this recognition,” said Austin.
According to Austin, Garner took on these new responsibilities, working hard to learn all that comes with it, in an efficient and organized manner. Garner has made improvements that have resulted in decreasing billing vulnerabilities by working with associates to set up schedules that are more clear cut and efficient for the people receiving services from The Arc Steuben. She also oversees the Day Habilitation sites and works with the West Street and Oaklawn residential homes as The Arc Steuben works through piloting a new positive approaches-style method that impacts the entire workday. “With everything that Melissa has on her plate, she has also taken the time to pick up some shifts at East Main Street during the residential staffing crisis. She completed three in December and has signed up for and started four shifts in January,” says Austin.
The Arc Steuben currently provides services to more than 950 people in Steuben and surrounding counties. Services include job-readiness training, community employment, residential, transportation and in-home services. For more information, visit www.arcofsteuben.org.
