Weatherization Assistance Program

When homes are energy efficient, families save hundreds of dollars on energy bills each year. Since energy efficiency improvements are long-lived, the savings can really add up over time. The NYS Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is the largest residential energy conservation program in the country. NYS WAP assists income-eligible homeowners and renters by reducing heating and cooling costs through energy-conservation measures, while also addressing health and safety issues in their homes.

Pro Action's Weatherization Assistance Program is available to residents of Steuben and Yates Counties. Homeowners and renters of single and multi-family homes, apartments, or mobile homes that meet the income guidelines are eligible. Renters must have permission and cooperation from the landlord as possible investments are often times asked of the owner to contribute to the weatherization project.

For more information or to sign up for the Weatherization Assistance Program, please contact our Energy Programs Department at: 607-776-2125. Tour our website to learn more about all program at Pro Action.

Pro Action employees uphold the highest standards of professionalism and quality. Our Energy Programs Department currently has 2 BPI (Building Performance Institute) certified staff, and 1 Quality Control Inspector. Our staff also maintains up-to-date EPA Lead Renovator certification, mandatory Health & Safety, and Lead & Air Sealing trainings.

Understanding Poverty

Separating the Myths and Facts

Myth: Home energy costs are affordable.

Fact: Lower-income households fall into something called ‘energy poverty,’ which is typically recognized as when someone spends just under about 10% of their income on energy-related expenses, compared to a middle-to-upper-income household that may spend 5% or less. Those who are below 50% of the poverty level are spending roughly 35% of their income toward home-energy bills due to lower incomes, less efficient housing, and limited access to or knowledge of energy efficiency programs.
