BATH | On Friday, June 21, Jordana Schoolcraft was awarded Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Year at the North Western DSP Conference. Jordana was nominated by Becky Miller, Associate Director of Residential Services. Jordana has worked at the agency for 5 years and currently works at the Oaklawn home.
In 2018, the Oaklawn Residence joined the agency’s I CARE pilot group with a focus on developing caring relationships, positive reinforcement and keeping people engaged in activities.
In her nomination Miller wrote “for Jordana, 2018 started with a jarring realization that there were some qualities and mannerisms that she wanted to improve on so that she could be the best DSP possible”.
Jordana started reading the book Shift Happens: Making the Shift to Proactive Behavior Management by George Suess, to learn more about the philosophy of I CARE, and “Jordana began to blossom” said Miller. Jordana is now an I CARE champion, and has helped the West St. IRA team with the I CARE initiative, and she has also worked evenings at Oaklawn to help provide extra support to her teammates in terms of I CARE.
In her nomination Miller goes on to tell about how Jordana has helped her teammates and others at Oaklawn learn American Sign Language and personalized unique signs to communicate with a woman who lives at Oaklawn, as well as, the exceptional relationships she has with the people who live there.
“Jordana has always been a person centered associate and with her decision to pursue self-improvement, coupled with support from her team and the I CARE initiative has helped her become a shining star” said Miller.
