IHS Approach to Capacity Building

Although we can and will address specific agency needs for strategic planning, board development, etc,, we suggest that organizations start with a thorough organizational capacity assessment.  This assessment looks at the Leadership, Adaptive, Management and Operations capacity of the organization, and includes the board, executive management and senior staff as appropriate.

To provide the organization ability to support and sustain mission and enable to board to effectively fulfill its role, the IHS can provide board assessment and development.

The days of seeing technology merely as a necessary evil have long passed. Networking technologies allow us to move and access information quickly, we analyze our stored data to make sound decisions, websites focus on bringing convenience to our customers and staff, email systems and instant messaging allow us to communicate in the blink of an eye with staff, board, funders and consumers, and the list goes on.

The next area to address is data and analysis on the environment the organization is working in.  This analysis could include research of relevant needs assessment and reports such as the Steuben Integrated Plan and other planning documents of the Institute, published regional data, and now, the real-time data with Geographical Information System (GIS) analysis of 2-1-1 Helpline caller data.

This information serves as a foundation for Strategic Management and helps organizations to make data-driven decisions on which to develop, implement and evaluate a plan.  A concise and effective strategic plan will help the organization identify and act on new opportunities for mission impact and organizational growth

With a plan in place, an organization is now prepared and able to purse Planning and Resource Development that will help it to strengthen the organization and to develop and implement the programs needed to address it mission.

Please contact Patrick Rogers for further information on the IHS Capacity building initiatives and services.

"As nonprofits play an increasingly important role in our society, it becomes even more important for them to perform effectively.

In response, nonprofit managers have demonstrated a growing interest in management practices and principles that help them to build high-performing organizations, rather than just strong programs..."
