Cooperative Extension of Steuben County is offering a series of free workshops led by Patrick Roth, Elder Law Attorney, CPA from Corning on several estate planning topics this spring. All of the sessions will be held at the Southeast Steuben County Library, 300 Nasser Civic Center Plaza, Corning. The public is welcome to attend one or all of the sessions. 

Almost everyone in Steuben knows someone, a child, a parent, a friend, a neighbor or a co-worker grappling with substance abuse addictions, while their loved ones search for answers … for help. In response to what has reached epidemic proportions, Steuben will host a Community Opioid & Substance Abuse Forum from 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 23 at Hornell High School.

The Twin Tiers Breastfeeding Network (TTBN) is accepting nominations for the 12th annual Breastfeeding Friendly Awards.  These awards recognize businesses, individuals, and organizations for their valuable support of breastfeeding mothers.  

Summer will soon be here and for a single mom of a 4-year-old, working full time at minimum wage, it could cost over one-third of her gross earnings to pay for daycare. Turning Point serves single moms, single dads, families, and seniors every day with food, short-term financial help, financial stability guidance, mentoring, and information/referral to other resources and support services. On May 13th in Bath and May 20th in Corning, we will hold our 9th Annual STEPS Walk. It is a simple way we can raise funds for Turning Point, a service priority of Catholic Charities of Steuben.

The Tompkins County Legislature has adopted a new Local Law that raises to 21 the legal age for tobacco sale and purchase in Tompkins County.  The vote was 9-5, with Legislators Dan Klein, Mike Sigler, Peter Stein, Will Burbank, and Carol Chock voting no.

Funding the full costs - including the overhead - for foundation and government funded programs is a longstanding challenge for nonprofits. Finally, this issue is being understood as a systemic problem affecting nonprofit service quality, sustainability, nonprofit compensation, and services to communities. With the new OMB (Office of Management and Budget) Uniform Guidance, there's a new tool to use as well.

Turning Point serves the 37% of Steuben County’s population who are living in poverty by stabilizing and supporting them as they strive for self-sufficiency. US Census data finds families struggle in poverty for about two years before they are able to move to self-sufficiency.

A group of health-minded organizations team up to host a Community Health Expo at the Hornell YMCA on June 15th. 

Eagen brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having been with The Arc of Chemung for 19 years. Most recently, Eagen served as the Associate Executive Director for Programs and previously, the Residential Director. Prior to joining The Arc of Chemung, Eagen held a key management role, for 19 years, at Glove House.

Chemung County residents can get moving and win great prizes for our annual “Gold Shoe Step It Up Challenge.”   This free walking program runs May 1st through June 10th.  Participants earn tickets for prizes at our end event by finding gold shoes in local parks (limit 3 per family) or completing before and after health screenings.

The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care announces they are seeking applications for two important awards that recognize the businesses, organizations and volunteers who serve our community and improve the lives of all ages. These awards will be presented at our Older Americans Month Celebration on Monday, May 1st.
