Day of fun and activity aims to get families moving through play
[CORNING, 4/04/12] – On Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., the Corning Community YMCA will host a day full of activities and demonstrations, encouraging all local families to be active on that day, and every day that follows. The Healthy Lifestyles Expo is a free event and is open to the public. Fire trucks, police car seat safety checks, a bike helmet give away, and hovercraft demonstrations are among the scheduled children’s activities. Families are encouraged to come out for this FREE day of play and begin their journey toward healthy living. The Expo, co-sponsored by WETM-TV, The Star Gazette, Magic FM, Kraft, Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Gaffer District, and the Corning Community YMCA in conjunction with the Y-USA’s annual Healthy Kids Day, is meant for children of all ages. Its purpose is to teach kids, parents, and their grandparents various ways to practice healthy lifestyle choices and to inspire a lifetime appreciation and integration of physical activity into their daily lives. The Corning/Elmira community is experiencing one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the country. The YMCA understands that educating children and their families is a priority in addressing this problem. The idea for the Expo is the result of a community initiative called FAST (Fit and Strong Together), a collaborative of community organizations and individuals focused on improving childhood fitness and reducing childhood obesity in the Southern Tier. This Healthy Kids Day/Healthy Lifestyles Expo offers something for everyone, providing exhibitions, demonstrations, and fun and safety-based activities. Among the registered exhibitors are Arnot Health, Wegmans, the Bath VA Medical Center, United Way, Hands on Chiropractic, and many more.
Volunteers are needed to ensure a successful event. If you are interested in volunteering or being involved, please contact the Corning Community YMCA directly at kmorse@corningymca.org.
