New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) will be closing the dry ice and bottled water distribution site at the New Beginnings Methodist Church effective 8pm Sunday evening. The Ernie Davis Middle School distribution site will remain open today from 8am to 8pm.
In addition, NYSEG will be opening a site today at the NYSEG offices located at 1 Electric Drive in Horseheads. The site will operate from 8am to 8pm. NYSEG will provide dry ice and bottled water for as long as necessary.
Andy Avery, Chemung County/City of Elmira Department of Public Works Commissioner is asking residents to move their vehicles from the streets throughout the County in the affected areas so crews and their trucks can have access to the debris for pick-up. Also, motorists are asked to use extreme caution driving in the areas where debris is piled up causing limited visibility. Keep a watchful eye out for children and vehicles which may be entering the roadway.
The State of Emergency remains in effect in the City of Elmira as numerous traffic signals remain inoperable. Please limit travel to business travel only and use extreme caution, for your safety and to allow for the increased truck traffic of the utility companies and debris pick-up crews.
The Red Cross Shelter at Elmira Free Academy closed as of Sunday afternoon. Anyone needing assistance is asked to call the Red Cross directly at 607-734-3317.
As of Sunday afternoon, 16 homes throughout the County have been deemed uninhabitable with further assessments being completed on Monday.
Once again, City of Elmira Police Chief Michael Robertson would like to remind residents, according to NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law, at any uncontrolled intersection ALL vehicles must come to a complete stop and then proceed according to the rules of the road. Not only is this a safety issue for drivers, it is a traffic violation and tickets will be issued.
