Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County plans Annual Dinner Event and FLXGives Campaign
for Friday, November 12

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County (CCE-Steuben) has a big day planned for Friday, November 12. They will be celebrating their Annual Meeting with a TRIVIA competition led by Bob Smith of Bulldog Sounds DJ Services at the Barrelhouse 6 Distillery (B6D) in Hammondsport! They will also be promoting their 2021 project for the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes’ FLXGives Day – a $13,000 campaign to build a community pavilion and permaculture garden on property on Haverling Street in Bath.

The Annual Dinner will feature Kara Mackey, owner and head distiller of B6D, who will give a talk on the challenges of procuring heirloom/organic/native grown raw materials. CCE Steuben will be celebrating their annual Friends of Extension awards, sharing a tasty dinner prepared by Timberstone Grill, and offering some great prizes and raffles. The team trivia event called “Putting Knowledge to Work (and Play)”  will offer prizes for the winners. The dinner event will be held from 5:00-9:00 p.m. at B6D, 9558 Middle Road, Hammondsport. Trivia teams are invited to reserve their space by calling 607-664-2300 or online at bit.ly/ccedinner21. Teams of up to six persons will be accepted.

Also that day CCE Steuben will be wrapping up their FLXGives project campaign. Betty Langendorfer was a long time and beloved Master Gardener for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Steuben and Chemung Counties. When Betty passed away in 2018 at the age of 93 she sold a two acre plot of land on Haverling Street to the village of Bath. This property is currently being designed as a multi-use area for the community. The village is planning to put in a parking lot and a dog park.

CCE Steuben sees the opportunity for part of this land to become a gardening educational area similar to the Mossy Bank Park. Their agriculture program has designed a permaculture garden for the space that uses the techniques and practices that combine the best of wildlife gardening, edible landscaping and native plant cultivation into one low-maintenance, self-contained and productive ecosystem. Their project this year also aims to build a pavilion on the land that can become a teaching area for the community. Master Gardeners can use the space for training, 4-H youth can use it for their Spring Garden Meeting and gardening projects, and the community can use it for K-9 dog demonstrations and other community workshops. To read more about the project visit bit.ly/flxbettysdream. Donations will be accepted at that link from 6:00 p.m. on November 11 through 6:00 p.m. on November 12. Or mail your check marked FLXGives prior to November 11 to CCE Steuben, 20 E Morris St, Bath, New York 14810.

CCE-Steuben will be honoring the following Friends of Extension at the Annual Dinner:

  • Campus Connection – Eduardo Gonzalez
  • Friend of Extension – Steuben County Farm Bureau
  • Friend of Extension – Pro Action Inc. Youth Development Program
  • Outstanding Volunteer – Patrick Roth
  • Outstanding Volunteer – Amey Rusak

The ticket price of $50 per person will include hors’doerves, dinner provided by Timberstone Grill, and all the fun that Bob Smith of Bulldog Sounds DJ Services provides with his trivia events. CCE Steuben will be following COVID-19 requirements as laid out by the CDC, NYSDOH and Steuben County Public Health. For more information about these events, call the CCE-Steuben office at 607-664-2300 or visit their website at PutKnowledgeToWork.org.
