THERAPY BOOT CAMP:
BRIEF ACTION-ORIENTED TREATMENT OF COUPLES AND FAMILIES

Presenter:
Robert Taibbi, LCSW

Like it or not statistics indicate that most couples and families only attend a few sessions of therapy. If you are to be effective, you need to hit the ground running. In this course we’ll discuss how to do exactly that – how to quickly set goals and shape the first session, how to quickly build rapport and assess, how to develop treatment maps for common couple and family presenting problems, how to use homework. Robert will walk through the opening sessions, tell you what to do, but more importantly what not to do. If you are new to couple and family therapy, this will provide a model on which to build. If you are an experienced, you’ll leave feeling challenged and creative.

Objectives – Participants will learn:

* 4 essentials of the boot camp approach
* 4 ways of changing the emotional climate in a session
* 4 sources of resistance

IDENTIFICATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE AT RISK FOR PSYCHOSIS AND IDEAS RELATED TO EARLY INTERVENTION

Presenter:
Jason Schiffman, Ph.D.

Psychosis spectrum disorders (e.g., schizophrenia) are among the most distressing and debilitating of mental health concerns. Impacting approximately 3% of the population, clinicians can benefit from training and resources to recognize and partner with this vulnerable group of individuals, as many people with psychosis feel isolated, stigmatized, and without help. Growing evidence suggests that with thoughtful early intervention many people with psychosis can recover and lead a life of their choosing. This presentation will define and describe psychosis, emphasizing the early phases of illness. The presentation will also demonstrate strategies for reducing stigma, increasing empathy, and facilitating early identification. A screening tool will also be shared, and an overview of treatment strategies will be shared.

RESILIENCE: BOUNCING BACK FROM DISAPPOINTMENT, DIFFICULTY AND EVEN DISASTER

Presenter:
Linda Graham, MFT

Resilience, the capacities to cope quickly, skillfully, and effectively with any stress or adversity, is especially needed in times of sudden transition and upheaval, when what we thought was solid ground turns to quicksand under our feet.  Helping clients “bounce back” from the challenges and crises of their lives may require also helping them bounce forward to a “new normal.”

In this webinar drawn from the intersection of neuroscience, relational psychotherapy, and contemplative practice, you will learn through didactics, experiential exercises, group discussions and live Q&A, to: use body-based tools to help clients reverse the impact of stress and trauma on their nervous system, returning to an inner sense of safety and equilibrium, their natural range of resilience; help clients manage disruptive emotions, deepen self-compassion and empathy, and cultivate the positive emotions that antidote the brain’s negativity bias and shift brain functioning from contracted survival responses to openness to learning and growth; cultivate the self-awareness and self-appreciation that help clients heal form toxic shame, retire the inner critic, and recover their inner well-being; teach the interpersonal skills that allow clients to trust other people as refuges and resources in difficult times; adapt practices of mindfulness to help clients identify dysfunctional patterns of coping and discern new choices of behavior

The direct, measurable, cause and effect outcome of these practices is resilience.

INTRODUCTION TO HOARDING DISORDER

Presenter: Michael A. Tompkins, Ph.D., ABPP

Hoarding disorder (HD) is the acquisition and failure to discard a large number of possessions that appear to be useless or of limited value in attempt to postpone or decrease distress. Hoarding disorder, as well as other hoarding behavior, is a serious and growing problem that can lead to eviction, homelessness, and death, and comprise some 40% of the hoarding complaints to local health departments. Those most at risk are frail older adults with poor physical and social capacity who live in these highly cluttered and unsafe environments. Furthermore, those with the problem often have other psychiatric disorders as well as little awareness of the consequences they face living in a hoarded environment. In this 3-hour webinar, Dr. Tompkins describes hoarding disorder, harm potential, features of the condition, and typical intervention options for the problem.

Learning Objectives
• Attendees will be able to define hoarding disorder.
• Attendees will be able identify factors that influence harm potential.
• Attendees will be able to identify intervention options for hoarding disorder.
