In September, Susan G. Komen HQ Unveiled their $26M Investment in Research, which is focused on Metastatic Breast Cancer and New Treatments.
Funded projects in New York State include:
- Columbia University for testing a new way to improve treatment adherence in early stage and metastatic breast cancer patients.
- Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to study how two common mutations impact how metastatic breast cancer respond to targeted therapies.
- Weill Medical College of Cornell University to study how ancestry, particularly African ancestry, contributes to triple negative breast cancer (TNBC).
Since originally established, Komen Upstate New York has contributed $5,747,214 to Komen research. To learn more about research projects underway, click here…
She Matters is a program within Upstate Cancer Center serving Central New York.
As one of our grantees, She Matters works to reduce breast cancer disparities in low-income communities, primarily with African American women.
With their new mobile mammography coach, they travel into neighborhoods to provide mammograms, helping to remove one of the most significant barriers of care – lack of access.
Mobile mammography coaches travel to urban and rural areas across New York State – to see what is available in your region, click here…
Our Upstate New York communities are truly taking action throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October! We know that breast cancer is #UNACCEPTABLE, and initiatives large and small are leading the charge to save lives.

October 13th is Metastatic Breast Cancer Action Day.
There are currently more than 155,000 women and men living with metastatic breast cancer in the U.S. and in New York State, it is estimated that more than 2,410 will lose their battle to MBC in 2019 alone.
You can be a voice on the federal level by supporting the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act, which looks to waive the 5-month waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance and the 24-month period for eligible Medicare benefits.
